Shy steps towards automated development: Jenkins on Digitalocean

Recently – rather recently, as it has been happening around me for a few years now 🙂 – I have felt the benefits of automating repetitive tasks, build processes, using CI/CD pipelines.

Even if not necessarily in my field of expertise, I started to look around on how it works, learnt more and more and finally decided to get my hands dirty.

Taking the development of a Github hosted WordPress plugin from “old” to automatic

This article is about cristidraghici/wp-just-an-admin-button. The content is about taking it from the form of a basic git project with many manual actions – yes, old is not a good word, maybe classic is a better one – to one automatically published to the WordPress plugin repository.

Some testing should be added, but we will leave that as something to be implemented in the future. Also, this is still the first iteration with my first Jenkins pipeline – therefore, if you have suggestions, they are more than welcome.

Remove unwanted apps from older Android OS

Some time ago, after an (un 😀) fortunate chain of events, I got my hands on an Alcatel Pixi 8079 – which has really-really low performance. Therefore, some of the preinstalled apps need to go.

The problem: some (e.g. Facebook) cannot simply be uninstalled. Hence, the current article about the ADB method to uninstall apps.

Prerequisites

  • Install ADB on your computer
    To install ADB on your computer, follow the steps in the tutorial here.
  • Identify versions
    Use App Inspector to identify which programs you want uninstalled.

Uninstall an app

  1. Enable USB debugging and allow the debugging connection;
  2. Open a terminal;
  3. adb devices to see the available devices;
  4. Use App inspector to find the version of the app you want to uninstall – in our case it’s the Facebook app;
  5. adb shell pm list users
    View the list of users – this is not a mandatory step, but everything is ok if you see the user 0 (zero)
  6. adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.facebook.katana
    This is the uninstall command for the Facebook app identified on the Pixi tablet

Trying the new Twenty Nineteen theme

Most people who are interested in news about WordPress are quite curious about the new version (5.0.0) together with the new default theme (Twenty Nineteen). In just a few words: together with the Gutenberg editor, this new version is supposed to come as competition to the more and more popular SaaS tools for building websites yourself (e.g. Wix). (more…)
